Philippine Coalition against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT)

The Philippine Coalition against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT) held its 19th annual convention last August 16 to 17, 2012 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria in Ortigas, Pasig with the theme “ TB-Free Philippines: A continuing Challenge from Childhood to Adulthood.” The convention focused on the continuing challenges of diagnosis, treatment of control of tuberculosis in the country with a special focus on children with TB. The keynote speaker was the late DILG secretary, Honorable Jesse M. Robredo. His talk focused on urging the audience to take an active part in engaging government to take action on the control of TB in the country. 

PAPA (Philippine Ambulatory Pediatric Association), which is member organization of PhilCAT, took part in this event. PAPA members were part of the Scientific Committee as well as the Pre-convention Committee. 

 

In the pre-convention seminar-workshop, “Harnessing Partnerships with Pediatric Societies at the Local Level,” PAPA TB committee chair, Dr. Rosalia Buzon, was invited as guest speaker and PAPA members Drs. Anna Lena Lopez, Benjamir Cabrera and Josephine Aldaba participated as facilitators of the workshop. Drs. Liza Santos and Carmen Bonoan were participants in the workshop. The objectives of the workshop were: to make an inventory of resources in existing agencies with TB control agenda; to identify strategies and actions to harness local partnerships for a strengthened childhood TB dots implementation; and to formulate a plan of action that will link up government and non-government agencies that will establish a network for referral and joint actions. Various groups with an active TB control program were invited as participants including representatives from DOH-NTP, PPS Chapters, PAPA, PIDSP, PAPP, CTCP (Center for TB in Children Philippines), PAPSHI (Philippine Academy of Physicians in School Health), PCOM (Philippine College of Occupational Medicine), DILG, DSWD, DepEd and Gawad Kalinga. 

 

Dr. Benjamir Cabrera also gave a presentation of PAPA’s TB projects during the luncheon symposium. Dr. Josephine Aldaba was chair for the simultaneous symposium on “Implementing Isoniazid Preventive Therapy (IPT) in the NTP: Issues and Challenges” with speakers Drs. Luis Chan and Lorella Averilla. Dr. Florianne Valdes was chair for “Tuberculosis and Tobacco Use: Current Initiatives and Challenges” with former DOH Secretary Dr. Alberto Romualdez Jr. as speaker. Dr. Carmen Bonoan was speaker for plenary session on “Local Government Unit Experience: A Model for Public-Private Mix” in lieu of her brother the Honorable Deogracias Ramos Jr., congressman of the 2nd district of Sorsogon. Dr. Bonoan shared the experiences of the Sorsogon in implementing their TB control programs including initiatives of both the public and private sectors.
