Reaching Every Purok (REP) Immunization Project 2017-2018

UNICEF is currently piloting the Reaching Every Purok Strategy in the cities of Manila and Taguig, where it seeks to reduce inequities in immunization for urban poor communities. PAPA acts as implementing partner to accomplish a wide variety of initiatives across different project elements; the team commenced work in August 2017 and shall conclude the project by the end of first quarter 2018.

PAPA integrated the Reach Out and Read program with REP, providing age-appropriate board books as an incentive for parents to bring children to health centers for immunization visits. Aside from seminars for barangay leaders and technical trainings (on electronic Target Client Lists, on the web-based Vaccination Supplies Stock Management tool) for health staff, PAPA joined Manila, DOH, WHO, and UNICEF in conducting a city-wide information activity with the Bakuna Boys.

The team also conducted efforts directed to improving service delivery—a Rapid Coverage Assessment in all barangays to confirm immunization coverage, data quality checks of client lists, and health center monitoring. PAPA also urged barangays to lead in REP through activating Barangay Local Health Boards, conducting IEC activities on immunization, passing resolutions supporting immunization and creating positions for Barangay Health Workers, and earmarking budget for immunization.

The Association also sought to resolve root causes of low immunization through institutionalizing essential systems, monitoring program activities, and forging new partnerships. Faithful to its advocacy of holistic health care, PAPA also conducted a Leadership Training Course for first- and second-line leaders in the two cities, DOH, and UNICEF, advancing the concept of anticipated guidance. Through the relentless efforts of PAPA, the immunization coverage increased significantly in many barangays, protecting children and communities from harm.

Duration of the project: 2017 - 2018
